We are thrilled to introduce Valeria Magini, an incredibly talented artist from Rome, who we collaborated with for our first pop-up in Italy at Edicola Erno in the heart of Rome. Valeria's artwork beautifully captures the heart and soul of Curù Skin, and we are excited to share her story and artistic journey with you. Below, you will find Valeria's own words about her background, inspirations, and artistic process.

I was born and raised in Rome, where I still live. As often happens with children, I started drawing with markers and pencils. I then tried to understand the use of oil painting and experimented with acrylics. I have changed many supports, from paper to cardboard, from canvas to wood, from fabrics and recycled materials to even using plastic.

I have researched and experimented a lot, often with a hint of restlessness, probably due to the impatience to find my expressive balance. Only recently have I discovered oil pastels and their capacity for layering and the strength of vivid colors. So, I made several attempts and finally found that with paper and smooth canvas they are a winning combination.

Each of my works starts with drawing and studying images of paintings, photographs, comics, or people; I observe and rework, explore and investigate reality. I use color in broad strokes and then layer it to recreate sinuous and moving bodies. I try to capture moments of life where emotions are the protagonists.

I start with a drawing on paper or canvas, depicting decisive shapes with indefinite contours. I always try, with chromatic combinations, to leave the play of light and shadow in the foreground. At the forefront is the search for reality, the need to understand what the eyes see when they look. This is because I always question what I perceive as real.

I believe in the beauty of everyday moments, which are sometimes difficult to glimpse. I like the small gestures of hands, the movements of people dancing, the smile of those in love. I enthusiastically tell of the kindness I find around me; I like those who commit, those who believe in a project, those who carry forward their thoughts, and consequently, I do the same.

I also believe in the truth told through colors, in an intimate perspective capable of moving the soul of the observer. I am romantic and a dreamer; I get lost in the sound of the pencil, I like the smell of oil pastels on my fingers, and I like to give what I see my shades of color.

Sono nata e cresciuta a Roma dove vivo tuttora. Come spesso accade ai bambini, ho iniziato a disegnare con i pennarelli e le matite. Ho poi cercato di capire l’uso della pittura a olio e ho sperimentato gli acrilici. Ho cambiato tanti supporti dalla carta al cartone, dalla tela al legno, da stoffe e materiali di riciclo fino ad arrivare a usare anche la plastica.

Ho fatto ricerca e ho sperimentato molto anche con una punta di insofferenza, data probabilmente dall’impazienza di trovare il mio equilibrio espressivo. Solo di recente ho scoperto i pastelli a olio e la loro capacità di stratificazione e forza nei colori vividi. Così ho fatto diversi tentativi e infine ho trovato che con la carta e la tela liscia sono un’accoppiata vincente.

Ogni mio lavoro parte dal disegno e dallo studio di immagini di dipinti, fotografie, fumetti o persone; osservo e rielaboro, esploro e indago il reale. Uso il colore a campiture e successivamente stratifico, per ricreare corpi sinuosi e in movimento. Cerco di immortalare attimi di vita in cui le emozioni sono protagoniste.

Inizio dal disegno su carta o su tela ritraendo forme decise dai contorni indefiniti. Cerco sempre con gli accostamenti cromatici di lasciare in primo piano il gioco di luci e ombre. Al primo posto c’è così la ricerca della realtà, cioè il bisogno di capire cosa gli occhi vedono quando guardano. Questo perché mi interrogo sempre su cosa percepisco come reale.

Credo nella bellezza che c’è nei momenti di vita quotidiana, dove a volte è difficile sbirciare. Mi piacciono i piccoli gesti delle mani, i movimenti delle persone che ballano, il sorriso di chi ama. Racconto con entusiasmo della gentilezza che trovo intorno a me; mi piace chi si impegna, chi crede in un progetto, chi porta avanti i propri pensieri e così di conseguenza faccio anch’io.

Credo inoltre nella verità raccontata attraverso i colori, in una prospettiva intima e capace di muovere l’animo di chi osserva. Sono romantica e sognatrice; mi perdo nel suono della matita, mi piace l’odore dei pastelli a olio sulle mie dita e mi piace dare a quello che vedo le mie sfumature di colore.
